Chapter 13
Turning in front of the looking glass in her bedchamber at Lady Tabithaâs home, Jane studied the intricate detail of her wedding gown. Her mother had visited the town seamstress, paying much more than the dress was worth to have it finished within a week. Jane touched the lace on the sleeves, tracing the beaded embroidery with her finger.
Suzanne picked up a handful of pins, beginning on her hair arrangement. Jane stared, unblinking, at her reflection. She had not seen Lord Seaford since the day of the ball the week before. She had tried to avoid him, leaving the arrangements to be made between him and her mother. Despite the intention to keep the wedding a quiet affair, word had spread throughout Brighton and Seaford that the new marquess had already chosen a bride.
âI will miss you,â Suzanne said from behind her, sniffing as she placed the pearl-studded pins in her curls. âI suppose you will have a new ladyâs maid at Pengrave.â
Suzanneâs farewell was only a sharp reminder of all Jane would be leaving behind. She would never live in Ashford again. She would see Caroline less often. She would rarely get to see and ride her horse, Locket. Her entire life had been changed.
She clasped Suzanneâs hand in hers, locking eyes with her maidâs reflection in the mirror. âYou have been a dear friend to me, Suzanne. And I doubt I will ever find a maid so skilled at taming my hair.â
Suzanne laughed, pulling her comb through a knot in Janeâs hair, making her cringe. âIt has been a pleasure to serve you, miss.â
When Janeâs hair had been styled and had earned her motherâs approval, they removed to the carriage that would convey them to Pengrave. Lady Tabitha joined Jane and her parents in the carriage, giving Jane a look of pity. When Lady Tabitha had discovered what had happened in the music room, she had traveled alone to Pengrave in order to âgive her grandson the scolding he deserved.â Although upset with her grandsonâs behavior, she had still seemed pleased when informed of their pending marriage. It seemed Jane would be the only one opposed to it.
Her heart hammered the entire ride to Pengrave, nervousness fluttering in her stomach like a thousand frantic wings.
She reminded herself that simply because she would be married to Lord Seaford did not mean she had to interact with him often. She could request that he leave her alone. She could spend her days on the opposite side of the property, taking her meals at a different time than he did. She tried not to worry herself over the major details⦠such as the need to one day produce an heir. She pushed the thought from her mind as quickly as it came.
With her racing thoughts, she found that the ride passed much faster than it had the last time. She ignored her parentsâ remarks about the grandeur of the home as her father helped her down from the carriage. Janeâs heart jumped to her throat as they entered the house.
